Burn-out is a state of fatigue, frustration, or apathy resulting from prolonged stress, overwork, or intense activity[1]. One is affected emotionally, physically, and mentally all leading to poor performance. This can happen in your personal life or work.
Work burn-out is often caused from a mismatch between the worker and the job. Infact, recent research[2] suggest that 28% of working Americans are affected from burn-out, and as much as 54% work in high-pressure careers. These are staggering percentages. Burn-out must be dealt with immediately. Here are ten steps to take
1. Rest – reduce stressors.
2. Become positive about every challenge and engage others in helping out.
3. Delegate difficult and challenging tasks to others.
4. Work life balance is important – focus on home when home – leave work at the office.
5. Be kind understanding and generous to others.
6. Use strategies to protect your time.
7. Practice “Productive Procrastination.”
8. “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy” – Improve your social life.
9. Reinforce effort, not outcome.
10. Develop your self-awareness – Stop being so critical of yourself and others instead reflect and review your choices both on the job and off the job. Implement changes as needed.
