Fighting Office Fatigue

Today was such a long day. You know, one of those days that seem like it would never end. I felt like I worked for hours. I look at the clock on my computer and it's only 11:00, 11:00!!!??? I’ve been here forever, what do you mean that it’s only 11:00?. I have six more hours before work is over. I can barely stay awake much less get through six more hours. I’m looking at my computer screen and instead of working,I’m daydreaming. It’s hard to stay focused when you’re tired. I’ve had about three cups of coffee already and it’s not helping. Since I can’t go home and take a nap or sneak one in at my desk, I better figure out a way to beat this fatigue and have enough energy to get through this day.

Some reasons for fatigue include living a sedentary lifestyle (sitting at my desk all day), and not getting any exercise. not getting enough sleep(staying on the phone until after 11pm), not eating properly (grabbing a doughnut instead of oatmeal) stress,(stressing about meeting deadlines, getting assignments completed or about issues outside of work) and boredom. To my surprise, boredom is a cause of fatigue. If the task at hand is not engaging, then I start to feel tired.

Now that I know the reasons why I feel fatigued, What can I do to stop it? To avoid sitting at my desk all day, I can get up, stretch and go for a quick walk. To ensure proper sleep, get off the phone by 11pm and read a book, or meditate. Get hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water. Stop stressing! While I can’t eliminate stress, I can make deadlines less stressful by planning my steps and breaking it down into smaller steps if it gets overwhelming.

I’m going to give these tips a try. If fatigue is affecting your work, then try these too. Let’s see if we can beat fatigue.
