Didn't get the job

Have you ever applied for a job, got an interview and it went well? You felt confident that you got the job, Only to get an email saying that another candidate was selected and feel free to apply to other positions within the company. TYou really wanted that job. The hours were right, the salary was right, the commute was great and you were qualified. You researched the company and you were impressed with the company culture and it was definitely a place where you wanted to work.

I experienced this recently and it was a huge letdown. I was feeling hopeful about the position and it seemed like I would get it. It would have been awesome, especially after receiving numerous rejections. So what do I do now? How can I move forward when I don’t get the job?

Feel your emotions

I felt disappointed and at one point, felt that applying for anything else seems pointless.  I wanted to give up. However, I had to snap myself out of it. Talk to a friend or a loved one. Go for a long walk and let those feelings out. Then, let it go.

Reflect

Although I thought the interview was great, maybe there was something I missed. I could have provided better answers to some of the questions. When asked, “Why do I want to work here?” Instead of saying I need a change from my current job, I could provide an answer based on how my values and goals align with the company’s values and goals. For example, If a company values volunteering and community service and you do as well. You can answer on how you believe in community service and you want to work for a company that is helping to make a difference.

Feedback

I don’t want to wonder why I didn’t get the position. So although this may not be possible in all situations, I could ask for feedback. Not “Why wasn’t I hired?” But “What can I improve? Or “What am I lacking?” Don’t take the responses negatively but use them constructively. If I lack a certain skill or knowledge about a program, then it is my responsibility to acquire that skill or gain that knowledge.

Don’t take it personal

It may not have been me at all. Sometimes, there are internal candidates within the company who are more familiar with the company culture, values, and policies than I am. For that reason, they could be considered a better fit for the position. Or the candidate just happens to have more experience. It is important to not take it personal and remember that the right job will come along.
